6 Principle Website Elements That Yours May Be Missing

What is your website missing?

We all know websites have become the standard for business growth and increasing your presence across the world. But, every website can be improved. No matter how refined you may think your own website is, it still could be missing that one thing to make it even better.

Here at Websense, we decided to compile a list of the important website elements that yours should have to help improve its success. Keep in mind, that every website has different needs and purposes so we kept it basic enough so everyone can benefit from our list. Speaking of purposes, let’s get into our first tip…

1. A clear purpose

When visitors arrive at your website they should know exactly what your site is there for. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, but the main point here is to explicitly tell the visitor what service or purpose you are offering.

Then, within the first few seconds, the visitor should have a clear action to take next. This could be placing an order, browsing items, or making an enquiry. If the visitor has come across your website, you can assume they had a particular intention that lead them from their Google search to your website, so make it obvious what you are offering.

2. Professional and original branding

This is a huge part of how users are going to remember you, so pay attention to how others achieve this. Professional branding can be achieved in so many different ways and it’s important to remember that your brand should have a unique style that no others share.

Originality is hard to come by when we are surrounded by great designs from other brands and areas. Yet, if you can successfully create your branding to be like no other, people will remember you.  A major website element is a logo, so spend some time creating one that reflects your company and values. Secondly, other website elements like colour, typeface and illustrations can seriously help keep your brand fresh in people’s minds. We recommend using these ideas as the foundation for creating a website so it will be coherent and memorable.

3. Navigation and layout

When users visit your site, they should easily be able to understand and navigate through your website without running into problems or confusion. Navigation plays a large role in how people decide if they find your website user-friendly or not, and this can make the difference from turning a one-off visitor into a recurring visitor.

The layout is another aspect of website elements that shouldn’t be looked past. Making sure your website is laid out correctly will help users navigate and understand which page is for what. It can become confusing for users if you aren’t clear on what your page is about and will lead to them leaving your site.

4. Call to action

Call to action for those who don’t know are basically website elements such as buttons or other interactive items that take the user to the desired outcome. For example, a coloured button that takes you to the checkout or finalises a purchase. Call to action or CTA’s are great for enticing the user into clicking on something that benefits your business.

If you are strategic with placing these into the right places then you can help increase whatever service you want them to click on.

Be careful not to place too many of these on your website, as a consumer we all know how these can be annoying and deter you from actually clicking it. Remember to accompany the button with an obvious phrase of text and use a colour that fits with your branding, as we discussed earlier. If you want to learn more about things like this, take a look at dark patterns.

5. Mobile optimisation

Mobile users make up a major part of total visitor counts to websites. Almost half of every website visitor is from a mobile phone. This means it is especially important to have your website optimised for mobile. If you have ever visited a website designed only for computers then you know how quickly you will leave when visiting on your phone.

6. Quality Content

alt="content"

Last but certainly not least, is content. This is one of the major website elements, meaning your website needs to have high-quality content to keep users attentive and coming back. The type of content your website will have varies depending on what services you offer, but ensure you are posting interesting and relevant information for users.

This also means that the physical quality of photos and videos should be high, meaning it is optimised for screen viewing and in high definition. You can also start posting blogs about things to do with your business, start email campaigns, social media content and so much more.

The main idea is to give users something more than just purchasable items or services solely for their profit, giving back to your loyal visitors. Then, you will have an abundance of visitors coming from all of the world to visit your website!
